Death of Robin Axford (YoE 61)
Sadly the New Year brought news of another death - that of Robin Axford, Year of Entry 1961. We are grateful to Roger Hoad for the following obituary.
A graduate of Brunel University where he studied Production Engineering. He worked for several major companies, including IBM & internationally for Cable & Wireless. He also spent some years as a consultant for PA Consulting Group and latterly he was a consultant to Southampton University. He eventually settled in Bosham and sailed his boat regularly out of Whale Island. He travelled extensively and maintained a keen interest in music, politics, films and current affairs. He leaves Sarah, his wife, and a daughter & son from a previous marriage.
His time at school was notable for his participation in basketball. He played as a point guard or ball handler and was renowned for his quick hands to provide assists and `steals` from opponents. Although, too old for playing in the 1970 English Schools winning team, he was respected by them, as witness some fond memories by that group:
`A really nice guy with a lovely infectious laugh and an enthusiastic approach to life`
`I looked at how he played basketball as an example`
`Always happy to encourage, enthuse younger players. I remember him consoling me after my poor England trial`.
`He did some bar work at a local hostelry and his reaction to an extremely garish shirt I was wearing was to describe it as looking like The Apsley floor after a good night`.
